George & Nancy Sloop

George and Nancy started square dancing in 1992 after a very persistent couple from their church asked them to take lessons. They began square dancing to ward off the “empty nest syndrome,” and completed Mainstream lessons with Alan Schultz and the Swinging Squares, Topeka, in January 1993. Following with Plus lessons given by Alan Schultz in the spring of 1995, they danced with his Plus Workshop Group. They are currently learning to dance A-1&2 with Dana Schirmer.

George and Nancy were members of Swinging Squares, Topeka, and TNT, a Plus Club in Ottawa. Active 21-year-members in Swinging Squares, they served four years as Presidents and held the office of Vice Presidents, two terms, as Lesson Coordinators, Travel Chairman for 6 years, and were on the Calling Committee.

They have been active in the KSDA Northeast District by serving as Vice Chairmen, Club Coordinators, and four years as Chairmen. They currently support and promote square dancing in the Northeast with their attendance at District functions.

George and Nancy joined KSDA in 1993 and have been members for 23 years. They were elected 2nd Vice President in 2008 and started the Vice-President progression to President. They served a term as 1st Vice Presidents and were elected KSDA President for two terms. They are currently serving on the Budget Committee. George and Nancy represented Kansas and were voting KSDA Delegates to USDA at five National Conventions. They have served three years on the Marketing Committee; two years as Chairman of the January Dance Ticket Sale, and the Convention Site Committee Chairman for two years.

George and Nancy were Dancer Coordinators for the 2003 Kansas State Convention and produced a successful convention. They were the Convention Style Show Coordinators in 2001 and the Advance Ticket Sales Director for three years. They have continued to serve on the Kansas State Convention Committee as Buttons Director, Hearing Assist Director, and Building & Facilities Director. George and Nancy have attended 20 State Conventions.

Serving on the National Square Dance Convention ® Site Evaluation Committee in 2002, George and Nancy joined the Pre-Bid and Bid Teams for Kansas to host a National and served from 2002-2008. As Chairman of Registration and Housing for the 57th NSDC, they played a very important role in the success of the Kansas National. They served on 57th NSDC Promenade on the Prairie, Inc. Board of Directors from 2004-2012.

George and Nancy have attended 16 National Square Dance Conventions. They represented Kansas in the Fashion Show at the 51st NSDC in St. Paul, MN and have volunteered at three National Conventions.

Always wishing to keep well-informed on new ideas to help square dancing grow, George and Nancy have attended four Prairie Conclaves, education seminars and National’s clinics and panels. They served on the Prairie Conclave Board of Directors from 2011 until the Conclave folded in 2014.

Square dancing has greatly enriched their lives, and they cherish the friendships they have made. George and Nancy hope to be involved in and continue to square dance for many years to come.
