Fred Trujillo

Andover, Kansas

Fred and Pat Trujillo began square dancing in 1978 in Springfield, CO. With the four squares they took lessons with, Fred and Pat formed the Flying U Twisters Square Dance Club. Spending weekends traveling to Amarillo, TX, to take caller classes, Fred became the club caller for the Flying U Twisters. He has been calling for 37 years.

In 1981, Fred formed the Good Times Square Dance Band and called with the band until 1984. He won his first Record of the Year in 1994 with his UTE recording of “Cowgirls Get Blue.” He later won Record of the Year with his Ocean Wave recordings of “Limbo Rock” and “Run Around Sue.”

Fred and Pat formed and called for several clubs in the Southwest District after they transferred to Garden City in 1986. Southwest Kansas Twirlers, Ulysses, and Buffalo Stompers, Holcomb, were two KSDA clubs that claimed Fred as their club caller. When they transferred to Augusta in 1996, Fred and Pat continued calling in the South District and Central Kansas. Fred gave lessons in Anthony, and they formed the Harper County Square Dance Club in 1998. Fred has been the Mainstream instructor for 12 Southwest Kansas and Wichita area clubs and club caller for 5 clubs. Guest calling for Kansas Clubs and Festivals in all four Districts, Fred has called in the neighboring states of Oklahoma, Nebraska, Missouri, and Colorado. Fred and Pat, along with Bob and Janice Jones, started the “Dancing N Branson” weekend. This event draws about 200 dancers annually and has been active for 14 years. Fred has called for 12 State Conventions and 4 Nationals.

Fred and Pat were Presidents of the Southwest Kansas Twirlers, Ulysses; Treasurers of River City Plus, Wichita, and Chairpersons and Historians of the Southwest District. Currently, they are members of Kansas Square Dance Callers Association (KSDCA), Wichita Area Square Dance Callers (WASCA), and a 24 year member of KSDA.

Fred, a fun loving caller, always puts his dancers first. He is usually on the road to a club dance, lesson class or festival five or six nights a week. Fred is known for his readiness to help callers, new and experienced. The square dance world would not be the same without Fred and Pat’s dedication and enthusiasm for this great activity.
